ASTRONOMY
|
Astronomy is the oldest science know to man. The South Kerry area is strewn with archaeo-astronomical sites trailing way back into the dawn of human occupation of ancient Ireland. These provide evidence of pre-historic pre-occupation with the heavens and its presumed influence on the lives of our ancient ancestors. The dark skies of the South Kerry region are the envy of the industrialised world where the natural dark skies are disappearing into the light of billions of street, office, shop, house and car lights and the true wonder of the star filled sky are veiled. The South Kerry Astronomy Group know how lucky the people of South Kerry are to have such pristine skies and want to share this wonder with both locals and tourists. Children are especially attracted to Astronomy and it is a great pity that it is not taught in schools where the knowledge of the constellations and the wonder of the skies could be carried on to future generations. The Astronomy group is now located in the basement of the Caherciveen Barracks and meet every second Thursday of the month, and other occasions in between. To contact us please call Julie at 087 7845688. Or email: skastronomy @eircom.net . We are also on Facebook: south kerry astronomy group.
